UK accountant fees · Published 2026

How much does an accountant cost?

Most accountants won't tell you what they charge until you've sat through a meeting. Here is what the market charges, and here are our own fees, in full.

A UK accountant typically costs £120–£200 a month for a small limited company on compliance only, £250–£450 a month once bookkeeping and VAT are included, and £150–£350 for a one-off self assessment return. Our own published fee for a small limited company is £95 + VAT a month.
The market

What UK accountants typically charge

What you needTypical UK priceWhat it normally covers
Sole trader, annual return£150–£350 one-offSelf assessment prepared and filed from records you provide
Sole trader, monthly£40–£100 / monthBookkeeping plus the annual return
Limited company, compliance£120–£200 / monthYear-end accounts, Corporation Tax return, confirmation statement, director self assessment
Limited company, plus books£250–£450 / monthThe above plus bookkeeping and VAT returns
With management accounts£450–£800 / monthThe above plus monthly reporting
Part-time finance director£1,500–£3,000 / monthForecasting, pricing, funding and board reporting

Those are ranges rather than prices because scope varies enormously between quotes. Two firms quoting the same figure can be offering quite different amounts of work, and the gap is almost always in what is excluded.

Why we are cheaper than most. We are a small practice that has automated the routine production work. The accounts, the Corporation Tax computation and the statutory filings are largely produced by systems we have built; what you are paying for is a chartered accountant checking the output and putting his name to it. That costs us less to deliver, so it costs you less to buy. It is not a loss-leader and the price does not rise after the first year.

What actually drives the price

Turnover, notably, is a poor guide. A £300,000 consultancy with four invoices a month is cheaper to serve than a £150,000 retailer with two thousand card transactions.

What we don't do

Statutory audit, personal tax planning, research and development claims, and anything requiring a registered auditor are outside what we offer. We will tell you if you need one of those and point you somewhere sensible. We would rather say so now than discover it halfway through a year.

Questions worth asking any accountant

Who actually prepares the work, and who reviews it?

These are often different people, and sometimes the second one doesn't exist. Ask what qualification each holds.

What is excluded?

The most useful question on the list. Year-end accounts, Corporation Tax and VAT filing are the usual gaps in a cheap-looking monthly fee.

Does the price rise after the first year?

Introductory pricing is common. Ask what the fee will be in year two.

Who regulates them?

Anyone may call themselves an accountant in the UK. Membership of a professional body with a practising certificate, professional indemnity cover and ICO registration is worth confirming.

What happens if I leave?

Your accounting data is yours. Check the notice period and that nothing is locked to their software licence.
